Apartment renovation in East London.
We believe in the uplifting effects of natural materials. Biophilia, meaning the love of life or living things, is a concept we aim to harness as a practice. Being surrounded by wood and plants has a similar effect as walking in nature. It can lower blood pressure and stress hormone levels, reduce nervous system arousal, enhance immune system function, increase self-esteem, reduce anxiety, and improve mood. All aspects which enhance our wellbeing and deserve to be in our homes.
The palette was kept bright to bring in as much light as possible to this single north aspect apartment. The exposed steel beams were re-coated with a light grey paint to match the stainless steel palette, inkeeping with the industrial bones of the unit whilst providing a softer and more homely feel.
This revamp was all achieved at a minimal budget, by re-using the existing kitchen carcasses and re-positioning them to improve the spatial arrangement. Providing a breakfast bar instead of a corridor. Introducing an engineered wood floor, new sheer curtains and careful in-built joinery to rectify and conceal bulkheads and vertical pipe boxings. All helping achieve a calm and minimalist look.
Poplar, a species of tree traditionally found in the lea valley with records going back to the 11th century, was installed as an alternative to birch plywood for the cabinet faces and the joinery.
Inspired by the Eames' use of readily available industrial materials, standard stainless steel L angles were fixed to the top of the cabinet faces to provide a minimal look friction pull and a custom internal window, transforming an oversized storage into a bright home office.
